Dr Geeta Appannah is an Associate Professor of Community Nutrition. She completed her PhD in MRC Human Nutrition Research, University of Cambridge in 2013. Since completing her doctorate, she has been working on a number of research projects seeking to understand dietary determinants of poor health in children including of those adolescents as well as adults, specifically on obesity and other cardiometabolic risk factors, and the factors that influence dietary intake in populations, including food prices and affordability. Her other research interests are including empirical methods to derive dietary patterns, life course dietary trajectories and social determinants of a specific dietary pattern or trajectory. She maintains close research linkages with a few international counterparts, for instance in Australia where she co-heads the Diet Special Interest Group of a prospective study namely The Raine Study, a collaborator in a study conducted among young people in Ghana and as a visiting academic fellow at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Dr Geeta is the President of Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO) and a member of Malaysian Dietetics Association (MDA) and Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM). She is an Associate Editor for the journal Public Health Nutrition and Frontiers in Nutrition, and a reviewer for various journals in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. Apart from that, she also provides science advice to a number of dietary guidelines and reports in Malaysia.
